More info on the project

Volumetric lighting is a technique used in 3D graphics to simulate the visible scattering of light in a scene. It can be compared to when one may see a sun beam shining through the cover of dusty blue-gray clouds, or when the trees part in a thick forest allowing for the shimmering light to cast down.

Replicating this isn’t the easiest thing to do, especially when you’re not using 3rd party plug-ins, but when it’s done right it really can add a fantastic presence to your scene.
